If I am sick or if I am well, thanks be to God, my soul will tell. If I am strong or if I am weak, thanks be to God in all I speak. When dogs bark and cars chase, when people die, when life feels like a race When dogs bark loud and the cars give chase, thanks be to God in every place.
When I pay and compete in the trials I face, thanks be to God for His endless grace. When no one is near or the crowd’s too tight, thanks be to God through day and night. When tears fall left or tears fall right, thanks be to God, my guiding light.
For every brick of Babel laid high, thanks be to God when they crumble and die. When the earth shakes and the bones reach shore, thanks be to God through every war. For each book written, each story stored, what else remains but to thank the Lord?
When nights are long and days are steep, When silence falls and shadows creep, When the world feels unsteady, unmoored, untoward, What can I do but thank the Lord? For the laughter, the pain, the joy, the strife, for the simple, the sacred, the pulse of life, for every small blessing, each great reward, What can I do but thank the Lord?
For the wind in the trees, the sun on my face, for each fleeting moment, each holy pace, for the lessons learned and the wisdom poured, what can I do but thank the Lord? They mock my faith; they call me absurd. Still I kneel low and thank the Lord. They worship stones, Reiki, charms, and spells, chasing lies while truth in silence dwells. They walk blind streets with hearts ignored, lost in lies, yet I thank the Lord.
For hearts asleep and minds untoward, for wandering sheep, I thank the Lord. Though they will mock, though they abhor, I keep the faith and thank the Lord. They live in the same hills, the same streams I see, yet blind to the wonders surrounding me. It must be a heart problem, stubborn and cold, What can I do but thank the Lord? If they could see the Hudson, wide and free, If they could gaze on the ocean and sea, If they could watch the night sky, star by star, what can I do but thank the Lord?
If they could feel the wind upon their face, if they could hear the birds sing through the space, even if their hearts refuse to be restored, what can I do but thank the Lord? For even as humans, we all can feel, The truth of God in all that’s real. Through stubborn hearts and eyes ignored, what can I do but thank the Lord?
I’m the bad friend, the one who strays, yet still He guides me through all my days. Majestic, gracious, full of endless grace, What can I do but thank the Lord? I stumble, I falter, I turn away, yet His mercy meets me every day. Grace upon grace,in every accord ,what can I do but thank the Lord?
I’m as stubborn, as lost, as blind as the rest, yet in Him alone my soul finds rest. Though I fail like them, though I break His sword, what can I do but thank the Lord? I have hope, though my heart is flawed, because I belong to the living God. In trials, in name,in every reward, what can I do but thank the Lord?
Thank you,
Will Forge

Amen, to gratitude for everything. Your blog reminded me of David Psalm 103:1 KJV
[1] Bless the LORD, O my soul: And all that is within me, bless his holy name.

What a humble, beautiful embrace of life’s full arc—grace acknowledged in bark, in chaos, in silent moments, in what breaks and what rebuilds. This isn’t rote gratitude; it’s coherence. When every aspect of life—ordinary, painful, or wondrous—is met with thanks, even ruin becomes part of the living pattern.
That quiet, wholehearted resonance is rare. This poem doesn’t just say thank you to life—it holds life, steady through all its turning tides. Thank you for offering that field of grateful seeing.

Amen! What can we do but thank the Lord? You’ve cleverly covered just about every scenario we’ll ever experience, Will, and through it all, a heart of thanksgiving is prescribed (1 Thessalonians 5:18). God knows the benefits of peace and joy will result. Lord, may I be faithful to thank you at every turn!
